Feeding Curiosity | Faces of Flavour

A photo journey

The past 20 months of Covid-19 and a complete tourism shutdown found me restless, needing to explore and seek out a little more joy. Together with food photographer extraordinaire, Florence Grunfelder aka @bonjourtasty and documentarian, Marion Gruner, we embarked on a photographic journey throughout Wellington County and called it Feeding Curiosity. We were looking to spotlight the faces behind the flavour in their own places, working at what they do best. I wanted to open the doors for you – to spotlight, celebrate, and offer a behind-the-scenes look at the people that make your food in this beautifully rich agricultural county. Making these regional connections, and unearthing the very notion of local flavour.

Here are just some of the shots from our summer road trips. Please visit the rest of our site for other taste experiences within the ergion.

1847 Stone Milling started with the idea to deliver fresh organic flour to Canadians coast-to-coast. We believe that if we source the highest quality Canadian grains and mill them as fresh as possible, the outcome is flour you are proud to bake with. Founded back in 2014 in smalltown Fergus, Ontario by family members Sasha, Melissa and Trevor when they restored a heritage barn on their family farm and imported an Austrian grist mill. The business has expanded over time to better serve our customers with a broader selection of specialty grains, the option for farm gate pick-up, and deliveries directly to your door all across Canada. The farmhouse was built in 1847. It is one of the oldest buildings in our county. It has survived many storms and seen many different owners. It was abandoned in the 1930’s and it was said that the local Fergus hockey team used to have parties in the house.

Elora Mercantile

We believe good things come in small batches.

If it wasn’t made by us, or a local artisan, it’s been sourced with care for the producer, the consumer and the environment top-of-mind. Whether you’re looking for home-made comfort food, some basics in bulk, or a unique gift, you’re sure to find something to satisfy your craving or spark your curiosity.

“We’re not big… but we’re small.”
—the late, great Stuart McLean

Elora Bread is a small-batch artisan bakery that focuses on traditional-method naturally-leavened (sourdough) bread. We believe in a hands-on approach to bread making, and all of our breads are handcrafted from start to finish using quality organic, natural, and local ingredients.

We offer a variety of breads that rotate throughout the week, alongside a number of culturally- or historically-inspired baked goods, such as focaccia, bialys (Polish-Jewish bagels), and shortbread cookies.
